A Hypnotic Approach For Anxiety Attacks
Panic Disorder can be quite common and when it is first experienced tends be very alarming as some of the symptoms often include chest pains and a suffocating feeling. There are numerous reasons why someone may have a panic attack. Following medical studies it is now known that stress is one of the greatest causes of panic attacks, including being in circumstances that cause tension and anxiety. People generally report, that panic and anxiety attacks come out of the blue for seemingly no reason. During an anxiety attack your adrenaline level is increased, bringing on the fight or flight response, so the body is all set to defend itself or run away.
Living with anxiety attacks can cause further difficulties, in addition to the attack itself. It may cause stress and anxiety, as you may not know where or when a panic attack may occur. You might even find yourself avoiding going to certain places where the fear may result in a panic attack, and quite a few people become isolated because they’re afraid to go out at all. A reduction in confidence and self esteem is common for a lot of people with panic disorder, which in itself can lead to further anxiousness. A panic attack itself can be quite frightening to anyone experiencing it and upsetting for other people around them as well.
Drugs are the main thrust of any intervention from the medical fraternity. However, this simply addresses the symptoms, whereas hypnotherapy works to remove the cause. A hypnotic approach changes beliefs at a subconscious level that bring around behavioural change in the circumstances where previously someone could have had a panic attack and therefore, stopping an anxiety attack before it even starts.
Lyta Humphris, a clinical hypnotherapist located in Plymouth, Devon, said we discuss your anxiety together and find the trigger, and then we are well on our way. I also make a CD for you to take home with each session to relax you and re-enforce what we have done. Being treated with hypnotherapy can help you learn to relax and understand what brings on your emotional stress.
Hypnotherapy for panic and anxiety attacks is a very effective option to conventional medical treatment. A hypnotic approach uses a combination of hypnosis and CBT to calm the mind and create more appropriate patterns of behaviour to help shake off the feelings of panic. The subconscious is very powerful and modifications made at this level are usually long lasting.
By way of example, anxiety, depression, IBS, low confidence, as well as problems like cigarette smoking and weight management.

I like how you mention that during an anxiety attack your adrenaline level is increased, bringing on the fight or flight response, so the body is all set to defend itself or run away. I have panic attacks every so often and I had yet to figure out what is triggering them. I think going through hypnosis would be a great approach to reducing the amount of attacks I have because it would give me a chance to take a break from the world and relax.
My sister has anxiety and it is starting to get worse. I think that hypnosis might be a good treatment for her to try. I like that this option treats the cause instead of the symptoms. How many sessions doe it usually take to see results? Thanks you for sharing this information.
Hello April – you are right hypnosis is a very good way of treating anxiety. I have been practicing hypnotherapy for over 20 years – and most of my clients come for anxiety.. As you said we have to treat the cause and then get rid of the symptoms.
I first look at what keeps the anxiety going – there are many reasons for this – which I can explain to you later, but when we get anxious we experience a range of symptoms some of which are trembling, rapid breathing, tension in the muscles, feeling of sickness, wanting to run away ….. and so on. We may then sensitize ourselves into a situation, we don’t like, then we begin to negatively think, and then we avoid the situation.
Relaxing when you have hypnotherapy is very important in helping anxiety and a very powerful tool. And during hypnotherapy you reduce the anxiety levels previously experienced in a given situation. I teach clients how to breathe properly and learn to relax, help with your distorted negative self talk – all in hypnotherapy.
My sessions are up to two hours – and I also provide you with a CD which I shall make for her to listen to.
which will help.
I honestly cannot predict how many sessions are needed – the usual is four to eight sessions.
